CHILDSAFE Home Safety Checklist
Keeping young kids safe is a challenge for any parent. Even at home, sharp edges and potential hazards lurk around every corner, and accidental home injuries are the main reason that children under age three visit the emergency room.
What's a diligent parent to do? Never leave a child unattended and pay attention to your surroundings at home or when visiting others. To help busy parents maintain a safe and healthy environment for their baby or toddler, use our handy CHILDSAFE home checklist.
- Cover sharp edges of furniture with protectors and check cushions for choking hazards
- Hide toxic cleaners and medications to prevent poisoning by precocious kids
- Install restraining straps to prevent furniture falling when baby starts to climb
- Lock drawers, cabinets and stairways with baby-proof latches and check them frequently
- Drowning hazards are everywhere, so keep an eye on your baby near standing water
- See what your baby sees by crawling through your house for an eye-opening experience
- Anti-scald devices help prevent burns. Keep bathtub temperatures below 100º F
- First aid training can reduce panic and help save lives if an accident arises
- Emergency phone numbers and health details should be accessible and frequently updated
