Babyproof yard & pool checklist

A yard with a pool is a delightful place to spend time in the summer. But yards are full of hazards.

A typical swimming pool drowning victim is a boy 1 - 3 years old, who is thought not to be in the pool area at the time. Make sure your children are supervised at all times when you are outside.

01Yard
  • Store all tools in a locked closet or shed
  • Do not use power mowers when children are present
  • Do not leave children near barbecue grills unsupervised
  • Remove barbecue grill knobs when not in use
  • Learn what plants in your garden are poisonous
02Swimming Pools
  • Fence in swimming pool
  • Install self-closing and self-latching doors & gates
  • Equip doors and gates with exit alarms
  • Keep pool area free of toys and playthings
  • Install swimming pool cover when not in use
03Hot Tubs
  • Don't let children into hot tubs until they are comfortable with hot water
04Garage
  • Lock hazardous chemicals and tools in closet or place them high out of reach
  • Empty buckets filled with water that may be a drowning hazard when finished
07Always be vigilant!
  • To successfully babyproof your yard and pool you will need to be constantly on the alert for possible drowing and poison hazards. Make sure your always supervise the pool when children are present!
