Babyproof kitchen checklist

Many of us spend most of our time in our kitchens. They are a center for entertaining, provide relaxation and help us prepare meals. But as any professional chef will tell you, kitchens are a hazardous place to spend time in, and you baby may well agree.

At least once every week, most families bring some of the most dangerous items that enter the home into their kitchens: plastic bags. Instead of saving them, throw out the plastic bags immediately. Those bags covering clothes from the dry-cleaner are especially dangerous.

01Stovetop & oven

  • Keep pot handles turned inwards when cooking!
  • Turn off stove and oven when not in use!
  • Lock oven if possible!
02Refrigerator
  • Door lock

03Dishwasher

  • Don't store items in the dishwasher
04Kitchen floor
  • Wipe spills immediately
  • Check floor regularly for potential choking hazards!
05Cabinets & counters

  • If a cabinet can't be locked, empty it.
06Knives & small appliances
  • Keep knives away from counter edges
  • Uplug electrical appliances when not in use
07Poisons & medications
  • Keep household cleaners out of reach
  • Keep activated charcoal on hand (helps absorb poisons)
  • Keep syrup of ipecac on hand (an emetic to induce vomiting)
08Electrical
  • Install ground fault circuit interrupters (GFIs)on outlets

09Always be vigilant!
  • To successfully babyproof your kitchen you will need to be constantly on the alert for possible choking hazards. Make sure to discard plastic bags as soon as you are done with them!
