The body mass index was invented by a Belgian doctor, Adolphe Quetelet, in 1835. It measures body volume simply by dividing your weight by the square of your height. The resulting number falls into one of four categories. Figures below 18.5 are considered underweight. Those falling into the range 18.5 - 25 are considered desirable. Numbers between 25 and 30 are prone to health risks while numbers over 30 are considered obese.
Your body mass index can be used to determine your size prior to conception and determine how much weight gain is appropriate during your pregnancy. Your doctor will want to ensure that your height and weight are appropriate for your stage of pregnancy as it progresses.
While the measure is simple and a popular one there are disadvantages to the body mass index. For instance muscle is much more dense than fat and someone who is athletic with little body fat may have a high BMI. Conversely many ederly users may have a low BMI as a result of their muscle turning into fat.
Ultimately a healthy diet and exercise will prove most healthy. For the best measure of your health use the body mass index in combination with your body fat measurement.
