BabyPartner checklists: packing a diaper bag

A diaper bag may be the most important thing you carry with you during the first year of your baby's life. You need to be prepared for most situations, but you can't make it so heavy that you never carry it with you.

It can be very tempting to keep your personal items in the diaper bag. But try to get into the habit of carrying a separate purse. It will save you time rummaging through looking for your personal items. And if dad is carrying the bag (he is going to carry the bag isn't he?), then you can take out your purse before handing it over.

Since dad will be carrying the bag too, choose one that is a nice neutral color that both of you will be happy to carry. Back packs are convenient because they leave both hands free for baby.

Here are some suggestions for things you should carry in your diaper bag. You might want to print out this list and leave it on the fridge. That way you can always check to make sure you haven't run out of something important. Check and restock your diaper bag each evening so you don't have to worry about leaving something behind if you're rushing out of the house in the morning. Some mothers pack two diaper bags: a large one that has everything they might need which they leave in the car, and another smaller lighter one with just the basics they might need while running errands.
