Having a well-stocked medicine cabinet is useful when you take on the role of your baby's pharmacist.
The following list is comprehensive, and depending where you live, you may choose to add or delete items to meet your requirements. If you have taken first aid training or plan to pack a first aid kit be sure to check out our first aid kit checklist.

Medication basics
- Antibacterial ointment
- Use to prevent infection of minor cuts & grazes
- Antibacterial waterless hand cleaner
- Quickly and easily kill germs on hands and thermometers
- Baby nail clippers
- To prevent your baby scratching its face with long nails
- Baby-safe sunscreen
- Baby-safe insect repellent
- Especially formulated for babies less than 12-months
- Bulb syringe
- Your baby cannot blow its own nose, so you'll have to help it.
- Calamine lotion (1/2 percent solution)
- To soothe rashes, bites and sunburn
- Calibrated cup or spoon, oral syringe or medicine dropper
- Make sure your baby is getting the correct dose
- Children's liquid decongestant
- Do not use except under the advice of your doctor
- Cotton-tipped swabs (Q-tips)
- Diaper rash cream
- Digital thermometer
- Digital thermometers are the most accurate and easy to use, but you can use a traditional one if you prefer
- Electrolyte solution
- To rebalance your baby's system after it has lost fluids by vomiting or diarrhea
- Flashlight
- Can be very useful to check your baby's ears, nose, eyes and throat
- Humidifier
- Can help soothe your baby when it has a stuffy nose
- Infant acetaminophen (Tylenol)
- Infant gas relief drops
- Mild liquid soap
- Regular antibacterial or deodorant soaps may be too strong for your baby's skin
- Petroleum jelly (Vaseline) or water soluable jelly (KY)
- Water soluable jellies such as KY can be more effective on sensitive skin
- Rubbing alcohol
- Make sure your thermometer, tweezers and scissors are properly disinfected
- Saline nose drops
- Clear stuffy noses
- Tweezers
- To remove ticks or splinters
