You. Your Pregnancy. Your Baby.

Pregnancy Calendar: Week Thirty Three

You may feel that your baby seems to be awake when you are trying to rest preventing you from getting a good night's sleep.

But when your baby rests it is probably having very sweet dreams. Research shows that your baby has REM, or rapid eye movementA type of sleep pattern. REM sleep periods alternate with the nonrapid eye movement sleep periods and last from a few minutes up to half and hour.
REM sleep is when all dreaming occurs. Infants usually begin their sleep period with REM sleep whereas in adults REM sleep usually follows the four stages of nonrapid eye movement sleep.

, sleep the type of sleep we have when we dream. You might never know what your baby was dreaming of, but take a tip from it and try and get as much rest as you can.

External development

Your baby is cramped in the uterus and is probably not moving so much now. Because of this your baby's movements are limited to kicks and jabs.

Your baby will have probably adopted the cephalic, or head down, position. Your doctor or midwife will be monitoring your baby's position as birth gets closer. If your baby is not head down, it is called a breech baby. There are a number of options available to your doctor for delivering a breech baby, including turning it around in a process called external cephalic versionThe gentle movement of a breech baby into the cephalic position, performed by an obstetrician sometime between weeks 32 - 34. Also known as External Version or abbreviated to ECV.

Pregnancy Tip!
  • As you grow larger your balance will change. It will become more important for you to take care while walking to avoid falls.
  • A fall can result in serious problems signaled by bleeding, breaking of the waters accompanied by gushing of the amniotic fluid and severe abdominal pain.
  • If you fall, visit your doctor for a check up immediately. Your doctor will check for placental abruption, or significant injury such as a broken bone.

Your baby is constantly learning about its environment. It's brain is developing very rapidly as the neuronsThe basic nerve cell of the body's nervous system. A neuron contains a nucleus within a cell body. They are classified according to direction in which they conduct impulses, and the number of processes they extend.
Sensory neurons transmit impulses to the spinal cord and brain. Motor neurons transmit impulses from the brain to the muscles and glandular tissue.
Neurons work according to electrochemical processes involving positively charged sodium and potassium ions and the changing electrical environment of the intracellular and extracellular fluid of the neuron itself.

Your changing body

Your red blood cellA concave disk containing hemoglobin surrounded by a lipoid membrane. It is the major cellular element of the circulating blood and it serves primarily to transport oxygen. The number of red blood cells is about 4 and 4.5 million per cubic millimeter in women (4.5 and 5 million per cubic millimeter in men).
The average lifespan of a red blood cell is between 110 and 115 days after which it is removed from the bloodstream. New red blood cells are produced at about the rate of 1% daily to keep levels constant. Red blood cells originate in the marrow of long bones. Also called erythrocytes.

production is catching up with the plasmaThe colorless, watery fluid of the blood in which the leukocytes, erythrocytes and platelets are suspended. Plasma contains no cells, instead consisting of water, electrolytes, proteins, glucose, fats, bilirubin and gases.
Plasma is important because it enables the cellular elements of the blood to flow through the circulatory system carrying nutrients and wastes from the tissues and maintaining the body's acid-base balance.
Plasma is similar to interstitial fluid in content and protein concentration. Because of this, it helps maintain osmotic pressure and the exchange of fluids and electrolytes between the capillaries and the body tissues.

physiological anemia. Still, your baby's final position may make you dizzy and faint as you lie on your back. You have just a few more weeks to go, and during the last thirty three weeks your uterus has grown to over five hundred times its original volume.

Born this week

Many doctors feel comfortable if a premature baby is born during week thirty four. If you are experiencing premature labor, your doctor will probably advise you to get some rest, which stops labor in most cases. The decision whether to use tocolytic medications to stop labor is a difficult one, and needs to be made on a case by case basis. If the waters have broken, delivery is the only option.
