You. Your Pregnancy. Your Baby.

What to expect during labor and delivery

Many partners feel helpless during pregnancy, wanting to be involved, but unaware how best to provide support and needed encouragement. But whatever doubts you may have about your limitations during pregnancy can be easily made up during labor and delivery.

To be supportive, you have to understand what the mother is experiencing during labor and delivery. You have probably already attended prenatal classes, and have a good idea of what to expect, and our section, stages of labor, will provide more in depth information.

A good birth partner is flexible and able to anticipate the needs of the mother before she does herself. Like a boy scout, you should be prepared and expect the unexpected. Anticipation and flexibility will make up for perfection during labor and delivery because it always never proceeds the way you have planned it.

Sometimes a situation will arise that will require you to take command. While rare, the baby will sometimes come sooner than expected. Our emergency delivery pages will prepare you to give birth before the arrival of professional medical assistance.
