Bradley method of husband coached childbirth

The Bradley method is named for the American obstetrician, Doctor Robert Bradley, who developed the concept of 'husband coached childbirth'.

It is one of the more rigid forms of childbirth education. Natural childbirth without the use of pain relieving drugs is emphasized, using controlled breathing and support or 'coaching' provided by the birth partner during labor and delivery.

How the Bradley method works

The Bradley method of relaxation and inward focus teaches women to concentrate on the pain instead of avoiding it. Deep abdominal breathing is emphasized, and a variety of different patterns are used to promote relaxation.

The birth partner, usually the husband, attends the classes with the mother and provides encouragement and support with positive statements. Classes usually begin as soon as the pregnancy is confirmed.

Advantages of the Bradley method

Supporters of the Bradley method like the strong emphasis on a drug free labor and delivery and usually choose home birth. The teamwork nature of the Bradley method and the involvement of the husband can dramatically improve the birth experience for both parents.

Drawbacks of the Bradley method

Until labor has been experienced, it can be very difficult to prepare for the nature of the pain each labor brings. Sometimes it is possible to react to the pain in a way that is very different to that which is practiced during the classes.

In many cases, women need to be distracted from the pain to cope with their labor, and the Bradley method can make the experience overwhelming. Some birth partners become so focused in their role as birth coach that they overlook the needs of the mother who is actually in labor.
