Active birth is a method based on hatha yoga that was developed by Janet Balaskas, one of Britain's leading natural childbirth experts.
The method is different from other childbirth approaches because it emphasizes movement during labor and delivery. Using active birth methods women are encouraged to avoid the labor bed and try other positions that are more comfortable and promote an easier labor.
Like the name implies, active birth encourages movement during labor with the mother delivering the baby while squatting, kneeling or on her arms and knees. The prenatal classes prepare the mother to try these new positions by practicing stretching exercises during her pregnancy and adopting new positions with the help of her birth partner.
