Complications during pregnancy are rare. But they can and do occur during any stage of pregnancy.
Complications during the first trimester usually end with miscarriage: some doctors estimate that about ten to fifteen percent of conceptions fail to implant properly. It can be difficult at this stage of the pregnancy to distinguish between a failed conception and implantation bleeding.
Complications later in pregnancy can often be managed for the remainder of the pregnancy. These may include a baby that is small for its gestational age or placental problems.
By the time the baby is ready for birth there are a number of problems that can hinder the path of the baby through the birth canal. These include placenta previa, where the placenta obstructs the cervix, or shoulder dystocia where the baby itself is too big to pass through the birth canal.
