Using sex to induce labor

Depending on your labor, your doctor may decide to induce the baby. Synthetic oxytocins are commonly used to help dilate the cervix and prepare the baby for delivery. Talk to your doctor about inducing labor.

Perhaps you will want to try natural methods first. No two women are alike and react to each method differently. There are three main ways of using sexual activity to stimulate labor.

The first, breast stimulation, can be used to start contractions. The second, sexual intercourse, is useful for stimulating contractions instead of using an oxytocin drip, and finally, nipple stimulation, is useful for restarting a halted labor.

Breast stimulation

Many doctors have found that stimulation of the breasts can be used to create contractions in the uterus. This is because a when a newborn baby nuzzles its mother's breasts, oxytocin is released to help contract the uterus after delivery.

You may choose to have your partner caress your breasts, while you are still at home, to help soften and dilate the cervix in preparation for labor. This is an effective way to begin contractions, and can be used safely unless you are particularly worried that the baby will come too soon.

Intercourse

Semen contains a high concentration of a substance called prostglandins. This chemical helps stimulate contractions of the uterus, although its effectiveness is more noticeable in some women.

If you have talked to your doctor about using natural methods to induce the baby, you may have decided to consider intercourse with your partner.

At this stage in your pregnancy, while still at home, you will probably want to lie on your back. With your partner standing, wrap your legs around his hips. You must remember to proceed gently and carefully during this late in your pregnancy.

Nipple stimulation

Occasionally, while in labor, contractions stop. Many doctors use an oxytocin drip to restart labor. Instead you can sometimes use nipple stimulation to restart labor.

Nipple stimulation is not always effective. Much of the effectiveness depends on how the stimulation is done. Emotional attachment, and stimulation by your loving partner can frequently be more effective than using a breast pump and frequently more effective than medical alternatives.

Sharing such strong emotions with your lover at this time will prepare you for the strong emotional attachment you are creating for your baby.
