Gardnerella vaginalis vaginitis, often abbreviated to G.V. vaginitis, is a bacterial vaginal infection.
Symptoms of a Gardnerella vaginalis vaginitis infection include a gray-white discharge. A foul odor, which may develop a fishy smell depending on the acidity of the vagina, will become stronger if semen is present following intercourse.
A Gardnerella vaginalis vaginitis infection is usually treated during pregnancy, because although the effects of the infection are still uncertain, there is concern that it will increase the incidence of premature labor.
If you develop Gardnerella vaginalis vaginitis during your pregnancy your doctor will prescribe oral or vaginal metronidazole or vaginal clindamycin.
