Vaginal discharge and changes

An increase in vaginal discharge is commonly experienced in during the first trimester. Called leukorrhoea, it is thought to be caused by increased blood flow to the skin and muscles around the vagina resulting from a rise in the hormone progesterone.

The discharge is usually white or yellow, odorless and is quite thick in consistency. During the second trimester there is possibly an increase in the flow of leukorrheaA discharge from the vagina, normally white in color. It takes place regularly and in varying amounts during the course of the menstrual cycle.
During pregnancy, a greater amount is expected, and will diminish after delivery, during lactation and after menopause.
A green or yellow discharge may indicate vaginal or uterine infection, or other pathology of gynecologic origin. It is the most common reason for women to seek gynecologic care.

Vaginal discharge and changes

The extra blood to your vaginal area also causes it to turn a blue-violet color. It is the normal result of local venous congestion and is an early visible sign of pregnancy.

Discharge or infection?

If the discharge you are experiencing is green or yellow in color, has a foul odor, and causes itchiness or irritation, then you should contact your doctor about a possible infection. A yeast or other infection is easily treated with creams and ointments that are safe for use during pregnancy.
