Shooting and burning pains can be an awkward discomfort during pregnancy, preventing you from getting the rest and relaxation you need.
Round ligament syndrome and leg pains are common complaints of pregnancy, affecting the sides of your body and backs of your legs. While there is no treatment, the pains can be effectively relieved during pregnancy.
As the uterus grows during early pregnancy, the round ligaments on either side of the uterus begin to stretch. As the ligaments lengthen and thicken, they cause pain down your sides to the groin. The pain is most noticeable when you make quick movements, which stretch the ligaments, and while uncomfortable, does not pose any risk to you or your baby.

By the middle of your pregnancy, the weight of the growing uterus puts pressure on the sciatic nerve. This can cause a burning pain down the back of the legs, and sometimes in the hips. The pain can last from the middle of pregnancy as the uterus begins to grow until the delivery of the baby.
To minimize the pains in your sides and groin, avoid quick movements such as getting up too quickly, that will stretch the ligaments. Standing or sitting for long periods can aggravate the ligaments. Stretching exercise can provide relief for many women. Try supporting the uterus when lying on your side, by placing a small cushion or pillow under your abdomen.
If you are suffering from round ligament pain, discuss pain relief options with your healthcare provider. Most doctors recommend acetaminophen, or Tylenol® to treat round ligament pain during pregnancy.
