membranes in your nose and nasal passages. This pressure causes nosebleeds and a stuffy nose in many women during their pregnancies.

Some women also develop a chronic cough from a postnasal drip. For most women nosebleeds are not a problem, but if you have chronic hypertension you will need to tell your doctor so that your blood pressure can be monitored.

Incidence of nosebleeds and stuffiness

Nosebleeds and nasal stuffiness are very common complaints of pregnancy.

Preventing nosebleeds and stuffiness

Try not to increase the pressure on the veins in your nasal passages, or dry them out. Avoid blowing your nose hard, to clear your nasal passages. Instead increase your fluid intake and use a humidifier. Do not use a nasal decongestant without your doctor's consent since many contain medications that should be avoided during pregnancy.

Treating nosebleeds and stuffiness

If you are experiencing a nosebleed, sit down, tip your head back and pinch your nose. Hold it for five minutes, then apply a cold compress to your nose. You can also try placing a cold compress behind the back of your neck. The bleeding will almost always stop by itself, but you can also try placing a couple of dabs of petroleum jelly to the inside of your nose.
