Healthcare professionals are unsure whether memory loss is the result of physical or hormonal changes or simply a manifestation of anxiety about the pregnancy. Studies have been inconclusive.
The results of some studies reveal definite signs of memory loss and an inability to find the right word at the right time. Other studies have found that pregnant women are just as capable as non-pregnant women in solving cognitive tests, although the pregnant women tested usually perceive themselves as less able.
But regardless of the cause, memory loss appears very real and frustrating to many pregnant women, especially during the first and third trimesters. Experts suggest several causes, including anxiety, fatigue, emotional changes and other common complaints of pregnancy that may contribute to forgetfulness during these stages of your pregnancy.
Although you may find your forgetfulness aggravating, don't let it get you down. Relax and remember just one thing: your memory will return to normal soon after you deliver your baby.

Forgetfulness is often a sign of frustration. Possibly you feel overwhelmed try to keep up with your daily routine, while preparing for the new baby and fitting in routine visits to your doctor. If you feel that you can't cope with your daily life, perhaps your body is trying to tell you to leave some time for yourself. Instead of catching up with an impossible routine, try spending an hour taking a walk by yourself, or reading a book in the afternoon. You may find that as you relax your memory will gradually return.
Develop a routine to help you cope with your daily activities. Instead of rushing to complete your chores, make notes and plan the day ahead: this would be a good opportunity for your husband to buy you a new PDA. Create a standard grocery list and keep your keys in one place so that you don't have to spend time looking for them.
If you forget something you need to do, try not to let it stress you out. Instead, relax and make yourself a cup of tea. There's a good chance you'll remember what you needed to do before the kettle has finished boiling.
For some women, memory loss, combined with a general feeling of despair or melancholy can be a symptom of depression. If you feel that you can no longer cope, and have lost interest in each day's new events, it is important that you ask your doctor for advice so that you can receive the support you need.
