Headaches during pregnancy

Many women experience headaches during pregnancy. They are especially prevalent during the first trimester.

The cause of headaches is still unknown, but many experts suggest that during pregnancy they can be the result of many emotional and physical conditions including anemia, emotional strain, eyestrain, fatigue and sinusitis.

Migraine headaches during pregnancy

Paradoxically, many women who routinely suffer from migraine headaches find that they disappear during pregnancy. Others find that there is an increase in the severity and frequency of their migraines. Some experts suggest that this is the result of hormonal changes that take place in the body while you are pregnant.

It is thought that migraines are affected by the blood flow to the brain, which is influenced by high estrogenOne of a group of female hormonal steroids that promote secondary sex characteristics.

levels. The symptoms of a migraine can be very similar to the onset of
preeclampsia. If you experience a sharp burning headache during the third trimester you should tell your doctor right away.

Headaches after an epidural

Some women find that they experience a mild headache after the baby is delivered. There is still debate whether these headaches are the result of an epiduralA regional anesthetic introduced into the base of the spine used during labor and for cesarean sections. Also known as an epidural block.

In less than one percent (1 in 100) epidurals, the needle punctures the thin membrane of the spinal cord, resulting in a leak of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Although this is not dangerous, it can cause a severe headache.

If you are suffering from an epidural headache, your doctor will recommend that you lie down and drink fluids for at least a couple of days. You will be given pain relievers while the puncture heals. If more treatment is required, a simple 'blood patch' will be applied. Your anesthesiologist will use a needle to apply a few drops of blood to the hole where it will clot. Recovery after the hole is plugged is quick.

Preventing headaches during pregnancy

If you experience headaches during your pregnancy, it is probably because you are worried about the pregnancy, and anxious that you have taken on more than you can handle. If you can identify the cause of your stress and recognize your concerns, you will probably be able to reduce or eliminate the cause of tension headaches for the duration of your pregnancy.

Relieving headaches during pregnancy

Headaches during pregnancy can often easily be relieved without using medication. These techniques also work for migraine headaches. Try lying down in quiet room. Close your eyes and place a cool damp cloth on your head or an ice pack to the back of your head. Practice deep breathing exercises and relaxation techniques to reduce feelings of stress and anxiety, and make sure you are getting enough sleep.

Eat regular small meals to maintain your body's blood sugar level. Avoid drinking coffee, tea or sodas containing caffeine, which may cause a headache. You should also ask your husband to massage your feet. The big toe is the acupressure site for the head and can often provide relief.

If you find that the headache cannot be treated without medication, your doctor will probably recommend acetaminophen (TylenolŪ), which is safe for use in pregnancy. Avoid taking any over the counter medication without consulting your doctor.

Alternative medicine
  • Acupressure: Have your partner massage your big toe, which may provide relief from headaches.
  • Aromatherapy: Soak a cloth in cold water and add a few drops of lavender essential oil. Place on your forehead and lie down in a darkened room. You can also ask your partner to give you a full body massage with lavender essential oil which will help to relax you and remove any feeling of tension that may be causing the headache.
  • Exercise: Relaxation exercises may help provide relief. Try these three simple exercises and see if they work for you:
    i. Clasp your hands behind your head, and slowly drop your chin onto your chest (this is similar to the brace position depicted on many airline safety cards). Slowly raise your head and let it hand back, closing your mouth to gently stretch the front of your neck. Hold this position for a few seconds before raising your head back slowly.
ii. Drop your right ear onto your right shoulder. Place your hand on the top of your head and slowly stretch the left side of your neck. Hold for a few seconds, then repeat on the other side.
iii. Roll your head around slowly, first in one direction for three or four circles before switching direction for another three or four circles.
