Tetracyclines are a group of antibacterials and antibiotics that are used to treat many forms of infection.
Tetracyclines are effective at inhibiting the growth of bacteria including Chlamydia: the bacterial organism that is responsible for genito-urinary tract infections, eye infections and Chlamydia psittaci. Also treated with tetracyclines are Rickettsia; the bacterial organism that causes Q fever, and spirochaetes Borrelia burghdorferi the infection that causes Lyme disease.
Most tetracyclines are not properly absorbed by a stomach containing milk, calcium or magnesium salts (both of which are found in antacids), or iron supplementation, which is used to treat anemia.
Tetracyclines inhibit the manufacture of the proteins that bacteria and protozoa need to survive and replicate and thus kill the organisms themselves.
Tetracycline should not be taken during pregnancy since it may be deposited within developing bone tissue and tooth enamel. Discoloration and potential deformity may result.
