Propylthiouracil during pregnancy

Propythiouracil is an antithyroid agent. It is prescribed by doctors to treat over production of the thryroid hormone by the thyroid gland, or hyperthyroidism.

How propylthiouracil works

Propylthiouracil controls the production of thyroid hormone by interfering with the body's ability to use iodine in its manufacture.

Propylthiouracil and pregnancy

An overdose of propylthiouracil during pregnancy may lead to problems with the fetus. Control over the prescribed dose and its administration along with careful monitoring will minimize the risk of potential problems.

Propylthiouracil passes into the breastmilk. Your doctor may allow you to breastfeed your baby if your requirements are sufficiently small and the infant is carefully monitored.

There is no evidence that use of propylthiouracil by infants and children causes more side effects that it does in adults.

Known food interactions

Your doctor will want to ensure that you are eating a low iodine diet while you are using propylthiouracil.

Consult your doctor about potential interactions when consuming alcohol while using propylthiouracil.

Disease interactions

Consult your doctor before taking propylthiouracil if you have a history of liver disease since this organ removes the medication from the body.

Drug interactions

Consult your doctor before taking propylthiouracil if you are taking any of the following drugs or medications:

  • aminodarone
  • iodinated glycerol
  • potassium iodide
  • anticoagulants
  • digitalis glycosides
