Some people believe that during your first trimester your body dictates what you should be eating. They feel that you should eat what you want and that your baby will extract the nutrients it needs from your diet.
Of course, your baby can only do this if all the nutrients it needs are in your diet. You may feel that you can eat unlimited amounts of food, but don't become too tempted! Unnecessary weight gain will make carrying your baby more difficult, lead to backache and make delivery harder as well.
You should also remember that it will be harder to shed extra weight after delivery. Although you may be craving them, don't eat chocolates or other deserts before going to bed, which can lead to heartburn, nausea and vomiting.
If you do need to eat before going to sleep, limit yourself to a nutritious snack. A high protein food such as sliced turkey is low in fat, and will take longer to turn into blood sugar. This will keep you blood sugar level elevated to minimize the feelings of morning sickness when you wake up. You should aim to be within the acceptable weight limits for your height before pregnancy. Excessive weight, or lightness will make pregnancy harder for you; another reason to avoid dieting during your pregnancy.
