Becoming grandparents

Congratulations! You are about to become grandparents. Perhaps you remember the emotional issues that you faced when you had children, after all, it was not that long ago! Perhaps you would rather forget them. But, like everything else, new technology, attitudes and medical science has changed since then.

You may suddenly have the realization that your children have grown up, that they no longer rely on you for everything. In fact, they themselves are taking on the responsibilities and commitment of parenthood. This may be difficult to accept, both for you and your children.

Be prepared to understand the stresses that they are facing and remember the relationship you had with your parents while you were expecting. Your children will be looking for any advice that they can get, and you are in a unique position with experience, having had children yourself.

It is important to remember that science, technology, attitudes and standard practices have changed. You might be quite surprised at the choices available to your children, and remember that they may not want to give birth the same way you did.

Ultimately, this is their child and they bear responsibility for it. You have a unique opportunity to be supportive and helpful. It is important to discover what your children want, and not what you think they need. In fact you have an opportunity to develop a new adult relationship with your children which can be tremendously rewarding.
